History of Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sport – 1990-1999



During the course of the 90’s the government and governing bodies of sports began taking the doping crisis more seriously. As well as more athletes were getting caught doping and admitting to doping.

1990
Congress passed an anabolic steroids control act placing them as a schedule III drug.

1991
Major League Baseball banned steroids.

1994
More than 40 Chinese swimmers failed drug tests between 1990 and 2000. That number is triple the amount of any other nation swim team during that time period.

1998
An Irish swimmer was suspended after being caught for pouring whiskey into her urine sample in order to mask doping.

1998
Mark McGwire admitted to using a steroid precursor, though his was not yet illegal in MLB. The MLB commissioners issued memos that banned the use of steroids in 1991 and 1997, the league did not institute random drug testing or penalties until 2004.

1999
The World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) was established.
