The Cold War lasted nearly 45 years and was a state of political and military tension following WWII between the powers of the USA and the Soviet Union. During the Olympic Games each country wanted the international power that came with the wins and sport doping was a way of accomplishing this for East Germany. Nothing was off limits, if it could positively influence an athletes’ performance, they were going to try it. In 1988 the Soviet Union came in first, bringing home 132 medals and East Germany came in second bringing home 102 and the USA finished in third. Sports competitions during this time especially, were important for international reputation.
