1. Some athletes may need medication for disease, though some of these substances may be on the banned substances list. As an athlete they must be aware and inform their doctor of what substances are on the list, this allows the athletes to prevent being put on a temporary or permanent ban.
2. Some athletes take performance-enhancing drugs to do just that: enhance their performance but this gives these athletes an unfair advantage over their competition.
3. Some athletes choose to
participate in recreational drug use, and while they may be doing a drug such
as marijuana, which is not considered to be performance-enhancing, the drug is
banned for a reason. That reason being that professional athletes often serve
as role models for young people and doing illicit drugs is not acceptable.
